Five Cottey College softball players have earned all-conference recognition from the Association of Independent Institutions for their incredible 2020 season. Cottey was also honored to have one individual named to the Champions of Character Team. The Comets ended the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season unanimously ranked No. 2 in the A.I.I. finishing with the top winning percentage in the conference and a 12-4 record.
Junior Lindsey Boord, Kansasy City Missouri, was recognized to the Champions of Character Team for demonstrating the five core values (Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Sportsmanship, Servant Leadership) of the Champions of Character during the 2020 season. Boord has been the starting first baseman and team captain for each of the last two seasons and has demonstrated tremendous commitment to the program and the mission of Cottey.
Five Comets freshman were named to the A.I.I. All-Conference Team. In the pitching circle, freshman Lacey Cruz of Osh Kosh, Wisconsin, led the Comets with a 7-1 record and a 2.85 earned run average. Cruz's seven wins were good enough to help her finish ranked 17thin the nation. Cruz finished in the top five of the A.I.I. in five different pitching categories while also batting .344 to help her team at the plate.
Freshman shortstop and Long Beach, California native Maya DeSota was one of four Comets' position players honored. DeSota hit leadoff for the Comets and slashed .417 with a .688 slugging percentage and a .541 on base percentage. She tallied one home run, three triples, and four doubles while leading the Comets in runs scored and stolen bases. Her seventeen stolen bases led the A.I.I. and ranked 7th nationally in stolen bases per game. She finished 13thin the nation in triples and 17thin runs scored per game.
Freshman Lauren Johnson of Lockport, Illinois garnered All-Conference honors behind the plate. Johnson hit .447, slugged .660 and had a .526 on base percentage. She stuffed the stat line with five doubles, a triple, a home run, eighteen runs, fourteen RBI, and five stolen bases. Johnson also shut down opponents' running games by throwing out 50% of would be base stealers.
Aryana Palencia, freshman from Phoenix, Arizona, played both second and third base for the Comets in 2020 and was on pace to possibly become the first NAIA All-American in college history. Palencia hit .431, slugged a conference leading .804 on the way to seven doubles, four home runs and a team leading 22 RBI. She led the A.I.I. in RBI per game, home runs, and total bases per game while finish in in the top ten in doubles, hits per game, batting average, and runs scored per game.
Freshman Karina Ramirez of Buckeye, Arizona, played an outstanding center field while also leading the Comets with a .511 batting average and a .579 on base percentage. She finished in the top ten in the A.I.I. in batting average, runs scored per game, doubles per game, and stolen bases. Her .511 batting average was 21stin the country and put her in sole possession of second place all-time in the Cottey record books.
