LACEY CRUZ PERFECT TO START 2021

LACEY CRUZ PERFECT TO START 2021

Nevada, MO.- The Comets begin the year with an 8-0 perfect game and then follow it up with an 8-4 win to sweep the opening series against the Spires of the University of Saint Mary.

GAME ONE:

Lacey Cruz (SO/Oshkosh, WI) picked up right where she left off last March by throwing the first perfect game in college history.  Cruz struck out 9 as a ball didn't leave the infield in the run rule shortened contest.  The Comets used a blend of power and speed to get the job done as seven Comets tallied at least one hit and five different Comets stole a base.  Caitlyn Morgan (JR/Madisonville, TN) led the offense with a 2-2 and 4 RBI performance on a double and a home run.  Karina Ramirez (SO/Buckeye, AZ) stole two bases and added her first triple of the season.  Alyssa Montoya also smashed her first career home run over the left field fence to go back to back with Morgan in the fourth inning.

GAME TWO:

Kirsten Wallace (SR/Whitehall, AR) came on in relief to pick up her first win since 2019 throwing four scoreless frames and striking out four.  Wallace retired after her second season with the Comets due to various injuries, but returned to the game she loves after a junior year cheering on the Comets from the sidelines.  Ramirez had another huge game at the dish going 2-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI, a stolen base and her first career home run.  Lauren Johnson (SO/Lockoport, IL) and Aryana Palencia (SO/Phoenix, AZ) added their first home runs of the 2021 season while Caitlyn Morgan added her second on the day to lead the Comets to a 2-0 start.

UP NEXT:

Cottey had to cancel upcoming games against Hastings, Saint Mary of the Woods, and Benedictine because of extreme cold and snowfall.  The Comets will look to continue their early season success against William Woods on February 25th at Vanek Family Memorial Field.
