Cottey Softball Tournament Recap: Colegrove Shines as Comets Go 3–1

Behind dominant pitching from Tournament MVP Tatianna Colegrove and timely hitting up and down the lineup, Cottey College put together an impressive weekend, earning wins over Mid-America Christian, Texas Wesleyan, and Bethel College, with their only setback coming against a strong Southwestern Christian squad. The Comets showed resilience, depth, and a growing offensive identity as they opened the season with a statement.

Colegrove's Complete Game Sets the Tone

In her first start of the season, Tatianna Colegrove delivered a masterclass in efficiency and composure. The freshman right-hander threw a 7-inning complete game, allowing just 6 hits, 3 runs, no walks, and striking out 5 on only 79 pitches. Every time MACU threatened, Colegrove answered with precision.

Offensively, Amelia Gassman powered the lineup with a 3-for-4 day, including two doubles and two RBI. Estelle Audette added two hits and two stolen bases, while Bailey Cravens and Gassman crossed the plate for key late-inning runs.

Cottey broke a 2–2 tie in the seventh with a pair of clutch runs, then Colegrove slammed the door to secure the season-opening win.

Offense Explodes, Colegrove Goes the Distance Again

Game two showcased the firepower of Cottey's lineup. The Comets racked up 11 hits, including home runs from Makayla Snyder and Grayce Taylor, and a four-run fifth inning that broke the game open.

Snyder crushed a two-run shot, Taylor added a solo blast, and Alma Garcia delivered a 2-for-3 performance with a double and an RBI.

Once again, the story in the circle was Colegrove. Pitching her second complete game in as many days, she scattered 9 hits, allowed 4 runs, and struck out 3. She showed toughness throughout, stranding runners and preventing big innings to move to 2–0 on the season.

Cottey Over Bethel College

Balanced Attack Keeps the Comets Rolling

Against Bethel, Cottey continued its momentum with a clean, well-rounded win. The offense produced consistently, the defense backed its pitching staff, and the Comets controlled the game from the opening inning.

Multiple players contributed at the plate, and Cottey's pitching—anchored once again by Colegrove's presence and leadership—kept Bethel off balance throughout. The victory pushed the Comets to 3–0 on the weekend and showcased the depth of their lineup.

Late Rally Falls Short in Tournament Finale

Cottey's lone loss came in a tight battle with Southwestern Christian. The Comets generated opportunities and mounted a late push, but a couple of missed chances proved costly.

Even in defeat, the Comets showed grit—continuing to compete, continuing to pressure, and continuing to look like a team capable of making noise this spring.
