Cottey College split Tuesday's road doubleheader at Ottawa, taking the opener 5–3 before falling 2–1 in a tight, low‑scoring nightcap. The Comets move to 8–2 on the season after another strong showing from their pitching staff and several timely offensive moments.

 

GAME 1 – Cottey 5, Ottawa 3

Cottey opened the day with a composed, well‑executed win behind an 11‑hit performance and a strong one‑two punch in the circle.

Early Action

The Comets struck first when Estelle Audette scored on a fielder's choice. Ottawa answered with an RBI double to tie the game 1–1.

Fourth Inning Breakthrough

Cottey took control with a three‑run fourth inning:

The Comets grabbed a 3–1 lead and never trailed again.

Sixth Inning Insurance

Audette delivered again with an RBI double, and Halen Hoelzeman added a run‑scoring groundout to extend the lead to 5–1.

Closing It Out

Ottawa cut the lead to 5–3 in the sixth, but freshman Addison Tippie entered and retired all four batters she faced to earn her first collegiate save.

The nightcap turned into a pitcher's duel, with both teams struggling to generate offense. Cottey managed just three hits, and Ottawa used a seventh‑inning single to walk off with the win.

A second‑inning RBI double put the Braves ahead 1–0.

In the third, Alehsandra Martinez delivered again, singling to center and driving in Grayce Taylor to tie the game 1–1.

Pitching Shines

Freshman Addison Tippie was excellent, scattering seven hits over 6.1 innings with no walks and two strikeouts. She kept Ottawa off balance all night and gave Cottey every chance to win.

Seventh‑Inning Heartbreak

With the game still tied, Ottawa pushed across the winning run on a two‑out RBI single to take the 2–1 victory.
