The Cottey Comets Flag Football team went on the road to Salina, KS for a pair of matchups on Sunday. In the end, the Comets finished 1-1 on the day. In their first matchup, they scored a touchdown in the final minute to take down Campbellsville 12-6, before falling in game 2 to Kansas Wesleyan 46-13.
The first game was a defensive affair, with the Comets coming away with a few critical interceptions. In a close game, the 6-6 scoreline looked like it may put the game into overtime. Then, in one of the biggest moments of the game, Sophomore Shamese Lee had a pick with just under a minute remaining to put the Comets in the Tigers half of the field. Initially it was a pick-six before a penalty brought the ball back. The Comets would quickly drive to the goalline before Quarterback Amya Corulla would rush in for a touchdown to make the score 12-6. The Comet Defense would hold strong as the Tigers had a few last ditch efforts, but held off the charge and held on to the victory.
Game 2 got off to a hot start as the Comets got an interception on the opening drive of the game. Freshman Tahmya Squire plucked a deflected ball out of the air and put the Comets in good field position with the interception. Junior Quarterback Alyssa Hollis would find Shamese Lee on 4th and goal to help Cottey strike first. A quick pass to Tahmya Squire would convert the extra point and make the score 7-0 less than two minutes into the game. From there, the Coyotes would take over and score on their next few possesions. The Comets did get one back when again on 4th and goal, Hollis found Lee for a touchdown from 6 yards out. Lee would be the leading receiver for the Comets in the contest, catching 13 passes for 80 yards and 2 touchdowns. She would also add 9 flag pulls on defense. Hollis was the leading passer and rusher, throwing for 133 and rushing for 69.
With the split, the Comets record stands at 2-4 Overall, 1-4 in KCAC play. Cottey returns to action at home on Saturday, March 9th in a 1pm contest against Midland University.
