Cottey Flag Football went on the road to take on the St. Marys Spires on Wednesday, and fell just short, with a final score of 15-33.
The first half was mostly a defensive show, as the Spires would score twice to make it 12-0 halftime score. One defensive highlight from the game was Suzanne Aubert, who recorded her first sack as a Comet. The Spires would add to their lead with a touchdown and two point conversion to make the score 20-0 midway through the third quarter. The Comets would make a big drive down the field, scoring their first touchdown of the game on a 3 yard scamper from Quarterback Amya Corulla. She had a touchdown pass a few plays earlier taken off the board by a penalty, but persisted to get Cottey 6 points on the board. Corulla would find Tahmya Squire on an out breaking route for the 1 point conversion to make the score 20-7. That is what the score would remain heading into the 4th quarter.
The Spires would strike again early in the 4th to make the score 27-7. Corulla would hit Squire on a big gainer through the air on the next drive, before finding Squire again for a critical first down near midfield. The Comets had been looking for a big play to spark the team, and they found it when Corulla would find Shamese Lee for a 35 yard touchdown. Corulla would once again find Squire on the two point conversion, with Squire making a one handed grab to make the score 27-15. St Marys would drain the clock on their next drive, scoring with just over a minute remaining to make the final scoreline of 33-15.
The Comets fall to 2-6 Overall, 1-6 in KCAC action. They have a week off before returning to Nevada for a home tilt against the 3-time defending National Champion Ottawa Braves on Wednesday, March 20th for a 6pm gametime.
