Cottey College Shows Grit in Road Test at Avila

Cottey College Shows Grit in Road Test at Avila

The Cottey College Comets faced a tough challenge Wednesday night, falling to Avila University 77–49. While the result wasn't what the team hoped for, the game offered valuable lessons and opportunities for growth as the Comets prepare for a busy weekend on the road.

Cottey shot 41% from the free-throw line and committed 24 turnovers, hurdles that made it difficult to build offensive rhythm. Still, there were strong individual performances—Gabby Burrus led the Comets with 20 points, continuing to set the tone on both ends of the court.

Head Coach Eatman emphasized that the team's struggles came from execution and discipline rather than effort.

> "Playing from behind is not something we can do," Eatman said. "Too many quick shots led to poor floor balance, which ultimately resulted in easy transition baskets for Avila."

Avila's balanced attack proved effective, with Melton scoring 20 and Stanley adding 14. The Eagles shot 46% from the field and 36% from three-point range, using their inside-outside combination to control the pace throughout the game.

Eatman pointed to missed opportunities that could have made the contest more competitive.

"We left too many baskets out there," Eatman said. "Missed layups and free throws might not have won the game, but they would have made for a much better outcome."

Cottey showed fight in the first half  but couldn't overcome Avila's experience and poise in the second half.

"In the third and fourth quarters, we played like a young team," Eatman said. "There was a major difference in experience on the floor, and it showed tonight."

Despite the loss, Eatman remains confident in his team's potential and eager to move forward.

"I can't wait to get to practice to get this bad taste out of my mouth," he said. "We're better than that performance tonight. We've got two more games this weekend to show it."

The Comets will look to bounce back as they travel to McPherson, Kansas, for the McPherson Classic. Cottey faces Central Christian at 5 p.m. on Friday and McPherson at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

With lessons learned and renewed motivation, the Comets are ready to put this one behind them and prove what they're capable of in the weekend ahead.
