Cottey College Holds Off Late Hesston Rally for 68–67 Road Victory

Cottey College survived a furious fourth‑quarter comeback by Hesston College on Thursday night, escaping with a 68–67 win to earn its second victory of the season and its first true road triumph.

The Comets controlled the game for three quarters, building a 37–24 halftime lead behind efficient scoring from their starting five. Cottey extended the margin to 49–39 after three, appearing firmly in command before Hesston mounted a late surge. The Larks exploded for 28 fourth‑quarter points—more than their entire first half—cutting the deficit to a single possession in the final minute.

Despite the pressure, Cottey made enough plays down the stretch to hold on.

Andrea Aragon led the Comets with 17 points, knocking down three triples and adding six rebounds. Ellaina LaNear delivered one of her strongest performances of the season, scoring 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting while grabbing eight rebounds. Gabrielle Burrus continued her steady all‑around production with 13 points, 7 assists, and 5 steals, while AuShae Farris added 14 points, including four three‑pointers.

Freshman guard Navaeh Sanchez provided key minutes off the bench, scoring 4 points and adding two steals, while Sydney Stumpf contributed valuable defensive energy and four rebounds.

Hesston was powered by Akiva Brown, who finished with 19 points and 8 rebounds, and Mia Curtis, who added 16 points off the bench. Sarah Beltran chipped in 12 points, including three three‑pointers, as the Larks nearly erased a double‑digit deficit in the final period.

Cottey shot 37% from the field and 37.5% from three, while Hesston held a 51–39 rebounding advantage but was undone by 16 turnovers and a slow offensive start.

With the win, Cottey improves to 2–9 (1–1 conference) and gains momentum heading into the heart of conference play.
