Comets Fall to Cougars at Home

Comets Fall to Cougars at Home

Cottey College returned home Thursday night to face one of the AMC's top programs, but Columbia College's depth and efficiency proved too much as the Cougars pulled away for an 89–46 win. Columbia, now 13–1 and undefeated in conference play, used a balanced scoring attack and a dominant rebounding effort to control the game from start to finish.

Columbia opened with a 19–5 first quarter and carried that momentum throughout the night, shooting 45.9% from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 at the free‑throw line. The Cougars' size and length on the glass created second‑chance opportunities, and their 13 made threes stretched the Cottey defense all evening.

Cottey's Bright Spots

Despite the final score, the Comets found positive stretches—especially in the third quarter, where they scored 18 points and showed improved offensive rhythm.

Gabrielle Burrus led the way

  • 16 points

  • Drew eight free‑throw attempts

  • Played 32 minutes and carried much of the scoring load

AuShae Farris added 9 points, including a three, while Sadie Hubbard chipped in 7 with efficient touches around the rim.

Columbia's Balanced Attack

Columbia showcased why they sit atop the AMC standings, placing five players in double figures:

  • Lexi Rubel — 16 points, 12 rebounds (double‑double)

  • Lexi Miller — 15 points, 3 threes

  • Macie Harman — 12 points off the bench

  • Ashtyn Klusmeyer — 10 points

  • Tori Rubel — 7 points, 5 rebounds

The Cougars' 42–23 rebounding advantage and 13 made threes were the difference-makers.

Looking Ahead

Cottey (2–11, 1–3 AMC) continues conference play with opportunities ahead as the schedule evens out. With young players like Ava Maner settling into larger roles and stalwarts like Burrus and Farris providing steady production, the Comets will look to build on the competitive stretches they showed in the second half.
