Cottey Volleyball Struggles at UHSP Tournament

Cottey College Volleyball faced a demanding four-match gauntlet at the UHSP Tournament in St. Louis, squaring off against a series of high-caliber opponents over two days. Despite finishing 0–4 in the tournament, the Comets displayed flashes of resilience, offensive promise, and emerging chemistry that hint at a team on the cusp of turning competitive sets into match wins. The weekend opened with a hard-fought four-set loss to York (NE), where Cottey rallied in the third set behind Serafina Auberry's 11 kills and Saylah Rea's 18 assists. Evangel (MO), boasting an 11–2 record, swept the Comets in straight sets, but standout performances from Rea and Braylen Ford kept the final frame within reach.

Day two brought early momentum against Friends (KS), as Cottey stormed through the first set with a .343 hitting percentage and strong net play from Dougherty and Adams. However, Friends responded with aggressive serving and a balanced attack, handing Cottey a 1–3 defeat. In the afternoon match against Freed-Hardeman (TN), the Comets nearly forced a fourth set, clawing back to 23–25 in the final frame. Hannah Janson's .333 hitting and Rea's 14 assists highlighted a late surge, though the team's overall hitting efficiency (-.010) underscored the need for cleaner execution.

Across the tournament, Cottey's serve game showed promise, tallying 20 aces and applying pressure in key moments. Dougherty and Auberry combined for 43 kills over the weekend, while Rea continued to anchor the offense with over 80 assists. Defensively, Morgan Koch and Ford provided stability in the back row, and Janson emerged as a reliable blocker at the net. Still, unforced errors and serve receive inconsistencies proved costly against opponents with deeper rotations and sharper execution.

Cottey's next contest is on the road for their American Midwest Conference opener at Harris-Stowe on Friday, before taking on Stephens College and USHP in Columbia on Saturday.
